Harrowhold

Welcome to the ruined gateway to the Harrowhold – a mysterious realm under assault from dragons! It cannot be long before the dragons destroy this gateway completely and take total control of the heavens. It’s your job to put a stop to them!

Putting the great dragon Vergos in his place won’t be easy. Over a series of grueling battles, you must constantly fight to sap this flying behemoth’s energy, defeat his minions, and protect the entrance from the dragons’ destructive rage.

The Harrowhold is a new dungeon type never before seen in TERA. If you’re to stand a chance in this formidable battle, you’ll need to put together a raid group of 30 players. Not only do you need the numbers behind you, you’re also restricted to taking on Vergos just once per week.

In this preview we’ll explain how the system supporting this weekly dungeon works, as well as going over the individual phases and the new reward items.

New Phase System

The Harrowhold is an instance divided into four distinct phases. Each of these may only be completed once per week, with each phase offering its own specific rewards on completion. A new system has been designed to ensure all this runs smoothly, in which players are not limited to a fixed number of dungeon entries, but by their progress within the dungeon:

  • If you haven’t completed Phase 1, you won’t have any mark on your profile (P) for this dungeon.
  • Once you have completed Phases 1, 2, 3 or 4, this will be displayed in your profile.

For TERA’s other dungeons, a single click on ‘Reset instances’ will delete your progress. This is not possible for the Harrowhold, and you will instead retain your progress over the course of any one week. For example, if you complete Phase 1 on Friday, you can continue with Phase 2 the very same day, or wait and resume the challenge on Saturday or Sunday.

The system has a few more features:

  • The phase which the raid group enters is determined by the raid leader’s status:
    • If the raid leader has completed Phase 2, then all group members will attempt to enter Phase 3.
    • Any group members whose progress is lower than this (e.g. none or only Phase 1), they will skip the incomplete phases and will not be able to earn any loot from those phases skipped this week.
    • Anyone who has completed a higher phase (e.g. already completed Phase 3) will not be able to enter the dungeon.
  • The progress in this dungeon is reset every Thursday at 5 AM:
    • For example: If a player reaches Phase 3 by Wednesday, they start again from scratch on Thursday and can once again receive the rewards for Phases 1 to 3.
  • TERA Club members have no additional entries for this dungeon.

Phase 1

In contrast to our standard dungeon preview format, we’ll only provide a rough overview of each phase of the Harrowhold, giving you a bit of advice for your journey. Finding our how best to complete the different phases will become Arborea’s most difficult challenge to date!

The first phase will come at you with four of Vergos’ minions. After fleeing along the winding passageways, you’ll find yourselves slap bang in a middle of these great beasts. Each dragon is surrounded by their own coloured aura. At least one character will have to stand in each of these zones, since any dragon left to his own devices will heal both himself and his allies.

Each of the circles casts a harmful effect at regular intervals. Although these do not cause any damage in and of themselves, you’ll immediately die should you reach a 10th stack!

Make sure you split up and rotate between the different zones before you collect your 10th effect stack. Also stay clear of the areas outside the circles, since you’ll receive a deadly debuff there as well.

Terradrax

  • Casts the debuff Terradrax’s Tenfold Curse (yellow icon)
  • Located in the yellow zone
  • Summons rocks to protect himself from damage. Once a rock has been destroyed, all the others disappear. Terradrax will be temporarily weakened and can be attacked again once more.
  • Terradrax has an attack with a huge range which immediately kills every character hit. It simultaneously grants the dragon a buff which permanently strengthens him if not removed by a priest or mystic.

Ignidrax

  • Casts the debuff Ignidrax’s Tenfold Curse (orange icon)
  • Located in the orange zone
  • Summons fireballs which home after players in his zone and then explode. The fireball hangs in the air above the player’s head for a short time before exploding and causes major damage in a small radius upon impact.
  • After exploding, a volcano-like shape arises from the impact location, its radius gradually increasing over a number of seconds. This small volcano disappears again once no players are in its immediate vicinity.

Umbradrax

  • Casts the debuff Umbradrax’s Tenfold Curse (dark red icon)
  • Located in the dark red zone
  • Cries out “[Player], burn in my darkness!” and targets the chosen player in his zone. A number of powerful attacks follow, each of which reduces the total HP by 80%.
  • Casts a harmful effect on five players, each of which summons an enemy after a few seconds. The summoned creatures inflict damage over short and long distances. Given their high defensive stats, these enemies need to be eliminated by taking advantage of Umbradrax’s powerful attacks mentioned above.

Aquadrax

  • Casts the debuff Aquadrax’s Tenfold Curse (white icon)
  • Located in the white zone
  • Summons up to 15 swirling vortices in his zone. Players hit by them continually lose a percentage of their HP as long as they remain nearby.
  • Heads to the centre of his zone and inflicts major damage on anyone in the area with powerful flaps of his wings, forcing players back to the outer edge of his circle.

Epic Loot

If you manage to defeat all four dragons, you’ll receive the first loot chest. Please note that all players must be nearby to receive this loot!

High Amount of Gold Uncommon Battle Pack Behemoth Essence
Design for crafting VM8 gear Behemoth Belt Vergos's Bone
Superior Etching Box Dyad Niveot Structure Vergos's Horn

Some of the reward items are brand new. You’ll find more details on the chests, materials and more under the ‘Rewards’ tab. Many of the items are also included as loot stacks, so for example you might find not 1 but 15 Superior Etching Boxes.

Phase 2

Once you’ve mastered the first phase and gathered up your loot, it’s time to talk to Kanbrim and press on with phase 2.

Phase 2 essentially requires you to survive two battles. First you must confront Vergos on the ground, but at 70% HP he will take to the skies where you’ll need to fire upon him with catapults.

Battle on the Ground

While battling Vergos in this phase there are a number of things to consider:

  • Vergos has five vulnerable spots: his head and his four claws.
  • Attacks to the head count as being ‘from the front’, while attacks to his legs count as ‘from behind’.
  • At 90%, 80% and 70% of his HP, two of his five vulnerable spots will be covered by a golden shield at random.
    • The two shields last for 15 seconds and must be destroyed within this time.
    • If you fail to destroy them, Vergos will unleash an attack which immediately strikes and kills everyone.

Battle in the Air

If you manage to destroy the shields and evade his other deadly attacks, Vergos will rise into the sky once he drops to 70% HP. On doing so, he’ll summon a wave of flames which travel across the area, inflicting 22,500 damage per second if they hit you – so be quick on your toes!

The aim in this phase of the battle is to shoot Vergos down using catapults, before the bar for his Destructive Breath reaches 100%. You’ll have to split up to repair the catapults at the edge of the area and shoot the dragon. Once Vergos’ HP drops to 40%, this second phase of battle is over. Otherwise the raid members will all perish, and you’ll have to start again.

Epic Loot

After Vergos drops to 40% HP, he’ll tumble down a hillside, but he’s not beaten yet! He gathers his strength once more and turns to face you on the edge of the cliff. The second reward chest awaits you in the middle of the area. Don’t forget to open it before approaching Vergos at the cliff edge. Please note that all players must be nearby to receive the loot.

Some of the reward items are brand new. You’ll find more details on the chests, materials and more under the ‘Rewards’ tab. Many of the items are also included as loot stacks, so for example you might find not 1 but 15 Superior Etching Boxes.

Phase 3

You’re almost there! You’ll find Vergos clutching on with his front claws, dangling above the abyss. It’ll take but just a few good shoves to send him tumbling. Unfortunately, he’s managed to recover from the battle in the air, so don’t let your guard down!

Take it to the dragon and get up close and personal with him, while making sure you avoid his fiery attacks. You’ll need to learn to deal with the following moves in this phase:

  • Terror
    • Every 10 seconds the player with the highest aggro will receive a harmful effect. Upon reaching 6 stacks, this will turn into raw Terror of the dragon which is accompanied by a broad-sweeping attack. Tanks should ideally try to rotate their roles and spread the load.
  • Fire Waves
    • As in phase 2, walls of fire appear with just one or two safe zones.
  • Volcanic Structures
    • This combat phase also sees damaging areas which enlarge while players are standing in them. You’ll recognise these miniature volcanoes from Ignidrax in Phase 1.
  • Flame and Dust Warning
    • At 90% HP, Vergos issues a Flame and Dust Warning to all raid members.
    • Raid members with the Flame Warning and those with the Dust Warning shouldn’t get close to one another, or they will suffer very high damage.
    • The same applies to the sphere summoned in the middle of the area – only players of the same buff type may approach them.

Phase 3 of the battle ends once you have reduced Vergos to 20% of his HP. Doing so will push the gigantic dragon from the cliffs, but he’s not out for the count just yet!

Epic Loot

For surviving Phase 3, you’ll be rewarded with a loot chest, this time containing even better items than before. Rally together, open the chest, then talk to Kanbrim to start the final battle against Vergos. Please note that all players must be nearby to receive the loot.

Phase 4

You’ve destroyed his offspring, and even beaten him back twice… But all you’ve managed is to feed the flames of Vergos’ rage. Now he wants to put an end to your interferences once and for all! Restored to full health, he challenges you to a final battle, unleashing his rampant fury against your vexatious rabble.

Vergos crashes down in the centre, further damaging the entrance to the Harrowhold. At the same time, the enraged dragon can absorb even more magic to further increase his destructive power. Anyone standing too close to the pulsating tear in the middle of the area will receive a harmful effect which deals damage every second.

You’ll find an array of similar attacks and tactics from the previous phases in this final battle against Vergos. Waves of fire travel around the room, and the stacking effect which drives the gnawing fear into tanks’ hearts makes another appearance. Vergos’ unbridled wrath also unlocks new attack moves which will make your lives even more difficult, and threaten your very survival:

  • Heat
    • Two players receive this debuff which deals damage in a large area if left uncleansed. Removing the debuff also triggers the AoE, but in this case there will be a small safe zone directly around the affected player. You should therefore try to gather around the affected players before attempting to remove the debuff.
  • Celestial Power Absorption
    • Balls of pure energy gradually float towards Vergos from the edge of the area. Destroy these spheres before they reach Vergos, otherwise he will receive a permanent buff which increases his attack power by 5% per sphere.

But all of this is just a taster of Vergos’ true power. It’s entirely up to you to master this challenge and banish this mighty dragon to the beyond! But we wanted to share these screenshots of his other attacks with you just the same:

Epic Loot

We hope you have a great time tackling this mighty challenge and mastering the final phase! Please note that all players must be nearby to receive the loot at the end.

Rewards in Detail

As Arborea’s greatest challenge, concluding a successful campaign against Vergos is naturally deserving of some exclusive items. Here’s a taster of some of the new highlights.

Superior Etching Box

This box can be opened by right-clicking and contains one of 16 new permanent level IV etchings. For example:

  • Previous: Glove Etching: Energetic III
    • Permanently increases Attack Speed by 4% and decreases skill cooldown by 2,5%.
  • New: Glove Etching: Energetic IV
    • Permanently increases Attack Speed by 5% and decreases skill cooldown by 3%.

Behemoth Essence

This essence works like a token. Once you’ve collected enough of them, you can right-click to open a trading window and exchange them for various parts of Vergos’s body.

Vergos’s Body

These new items allow you to improve your VM8 equipment. In the process, all existing bonuses (random options, enchantments, permanent etchings) will be retained.

These four items are not tradeable and can only be used by the person who collects them in the dungeon or who exchanges them for Behemoth Essence. These parts can only be traded indirectly if they are in one of the boxes from Vergos’ treasure chests. The box itself is tradeable, and provides a non-tradeable fang or scale once opened (more details below).

Note: While this transformation removes the bind to your character, the item produced is not tradeable, nor can it be made tradeable with a Liberation Scroll at +15 either. If you want to trade your VM8 gear, you have to do this at +15 before upgrading it with one of Vergos’s items.

Vergos's Head

The battle against Vergos ends in victory for you and your party, and you take the dragon’s head as a trophy. This trophy unlocks a quest which gives you access to a new brooch upon completion.

Follow the quest Requiem for a Dragon to Saleron in Val Elenium and you’ll receive the Marrow Brooch. The effect is the same as that from the Glowing Goddess's Brooch, but it lasts for 20 seconds and transforms you for this time into Elleon or Kaia!
